Description of the database
The main objective of the European Seed Certification Agencies Association's database is to present the latest seed production for the countries of the European Union, the European Free Trade Area and others from central Europe, for all agricultural crop species.
Format and statistics
The database contains :
- the approved area for certification (hectares), or failing that entered area. Are excluded the refused area.
- the weight of seed certified or standard (tons). For beets, the weights can be expressed in units for the monogerms and in tons for the multigerms.
There are three extraction modes of data :
- for one group of species, one year and one country selected, the produced species of a group are given,
- for one species and one year selected, the producing countries are given,
- for one species and one country selected, the year available are given.
Crop groups
The data are presented by species classified in nine crop groups :
- cereals
- maize and sorghum
- forage and turfgrass
- pulses
- beets and chicory
- potatoes
- fibers
- oilseed
- vegetables
Crop species are tabulated in alphabetical order of botanical name within each crop group. The common names in English and French are then chosen.
Countries
Statistics from 31 countries are available in the database today :
- 24 countries from the present European Community
- Switzerland and Norway
- Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey.
For some countries the data are incomplete.
Countries are tabulated in alphabetical order. The names are given in English and country language.
Year
The years are years of the harvest.
Data are available from 1997 to the latest available harvest year.
Categories of seeds
For each crop species all categories of seeds, basic and certified, are grouped :
- Basic includes : pre-basic, basic, PB, B, E1, E2, E3, Elite, G1, G2, G3
- Certified includes : Cert, Cert1, Cert2, Cert3, R1, R2, R3, OR, P.
Statistics sources
The different sources are the following :
- Certifying Authority or Designated Authority
- or published seed journals.
For the previous years, data have been collected by the GNIS (French Seed Association) directly from the relevant Certifying Authority or Designated Authority, the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF) or from seed journals like EUROSEMSTATS published by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) until 2002.
Updating
The Authorities who own the statistics commit to supplying, controlling and correcting themselves the data base two times per year according to the data availability : first one to key the areas and the second one to key the certified seeds.
