Seed Control Department is a structural unit of State Plant Protection Service (SPPS) which, within the scope of its mandate, is in charge of fulfillment of SPPS missions pursuant to "Seed Circulation Law", Plant Varieties Protection Law and Seed Trade Provisions adopted by the Cabinet. Seed Control Department incorporates Certification and variety testing Division and National Seed Testing Laboratory accredited by International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).
Main tasks of Seed Control Department are :
- To carry out seed and seed potatoes certification process, including field inspections, official sampling, seed analyses and variety post- control in odder to implement legislative acts relating to seed circulation;
- Registration of seed growers, producers and seed traders;
- Training, education and examination of field inspectors, samplers and seed analysts;
- Registration of plant breeder's rights;
- Organization of distinctness, uniformity, stability (DUS) tests;
- Maintain The Latvian State Register of Protected Plant Varieties;
- Maintenance of Latvian Plant Variety Catalogue;
